TINCKNELL SALVAGES SECOND DESPITE PROBLEMATIC PITSTOP

Harry finishes second in Canada one week on from taking Mazda Team Joest’s historic first victory.

Harry Tincknell finished second at the latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship on Sunday afternoon at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park as Mazda Team Joest scored its second-straight one-two finish.

Just a week on from Tincknell’s breakthrough North American victory and Mazda’s first win in seven years, the 27 year old and teammate Jonathan Bomarito were looking to double their tally at the 3.95km circuit near Bowmanville, Ontario.

Bomarito qualified the #55 Mazda RT24-P in an excellent second position and immediately attacked for the lead when the flag dropped for the 160 minute race. His advances were successful on the eighth lap as a supremely timed slipstream pass down the back straight moved him ahead of the Acura of three time Indy 500 winner Hélio Castroneves.

Tincknell jumped on board with 85 minutes remaining and quickly set to work building a 12 second gap over his pursuing rivals in a dominating fashion. Despite leading a total of 87 of the 125 race laps victory would the elude the Devonian in the final pit stop. A faulty wheel gun cost the team 20 seconds allowing the sister Mazda to take the lead with Tincknell playing rear gunner in second place. Those positions remained for the final 30 laps as Mazda recorded a dream one-two finish for the second week in a row.

"I am ecstatic for everyone at Mazda Team Joest. What a turnaround we’ve had this season going from a double retirement at Daytona to back to back one-two finishes by the middle of the season. Obviously on a personal level I am bit gutted not to be standing on the top step once again as we drove a great race today but this is motor racing and we win and lose together as team. We’ll look into exactly what went wrong and make sure it won’t happen again but the main thing is we got the best result possible for the team and the whole group of us will celebrate accordingly! Multimatic manufacture the cars less than an hour down the road from the circuit so this is their home race and what better way to showcase their speed and build quality than with a one-two finish!"

Harry’s next race of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship will be on the 4th August at Road America, Wisconsin.
